FAQ

Is Hollywood larger than Bollywood?

Producers face the greatest challenge of making sure their movie is seen by viewers.

Problem is, there are many movies competing to people's attention and money. And if you don't stand out from the crowd, you won't have much chance of getting watched.

What makes a movie a success? What makes an actor or director famous? Or a director? It's more than talent, it's also luck. You might have all the best actors in the world, but if they're working on a bad script, nothing will come of it.

And when it comes to films, there are two main types: big-budget blockbusters and small independent productions. Production and distribution of blockbuster movies costs hundreds of millions. These blockbuster movies are usually produced by big studios who want their movies to reach as broad an audience as possible. But big-budget films appeal more to older audiences.

Independent films are generally smaller-scale productions that may be financed by individuals or groups of investors. These films often focus on niche markets and cater to specific tastes. These films are usually easier to market and produce. This doesn't necessarily mean they are cheaper to watch. It is actually very difficult to find most indie movies.

We need both types? Is it necessary to have both blockbuster and independent movies? Hollywood is more important than Bollywood. That's because Hollywood produces almost twice as many movies per year as India does!

Can I start my own distribution company?

No. It is illegal to legally run a distribution business without being a distributor.

You must follow certain rules, even though you are not distributing films of other people.

You cannot, for instance, charge different prices at different theaters. You cannot also charge different fees to customers.

Also, you can't offer your services to any other company.

What is the difference of a producer and distributor?

Produced by a producer, the movie is produced. The movie is distributed via a distributor. Producors have the option to sell movies directly to distributors or theaters. Distributors buy movies from producers. They then sell them to theaters and cable channels or streaming services.

Distributors will need to negotiate with theatre owners about the location of their movies. This means that some theaters may charge more to see a certain movie than others. Distributors should be able to distribute your movie to as many theaters as possible.

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Indie filmmakers tend to assume that distributors will buy their films.

They are certain distributors will take their films, as they know that the public will love them.

But, it is very rare that this happens. Distributors often use independent filmmakers.

They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.

They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don’t want to miss out on these profits.
